Good Morning, Everyone!
I’m glad your joining me for this Introduction post to the Block of the Week project we are running on the blog! I will post the weekly block each Sunday. This quilt will have 30 unique blocks and will finish at 54″ x 63″.
This quilt is a fun and easy sampler project because each block is made using only Half Square Triangles, and each block has a different layout! You may choose to make all of your Half Square Triangles at the beginning, or make them as you need them for each block.
The theme for this project is Patriotic!
Yardage:
Reds: 1 1/4 Yards
Blues: 2 Yards
Neutrals: 2 3/4 Yards
You may choose to use one fabric per color, or make it SCRAPPY! I pulled a variety of red, blue and neutral fabrics to use in this quilt.
Half Square Triangles (HST):
You will need to make a pile of Half Square Triangles (HST)in this quilt. We are going to need:
248 Blue/Neutral Half square triangles
232 Red/Neutral Half Square Triangles
Don’t be discouraged by those numbers! Take it a few at a time.
Begin by cutting squares!
Rotary Cutting:
From RED fabrics, cut (116) 2 7/8″ squares.
From BLUE fabrics, cut (124) 2 7/8″ squares.
From Neutral Fabrics, cut (240) 2 7/8″ squares.
On the back side of the neutral squares, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner.
For the Red/Neutral HST units, place a red square and a neutral square right-sides-together. Sew 1/4″ on both sides of the drawn diagonal line.
Cut on the drawn line and press the units open to the red. Repeat this process until all of your red squares are gone.
For the Blue/Neutral HST units, place a blue square and a neutral square right-sides-together. Sew 1/4″ on both sides of the drawn diagonal line.
Cut on the drawn line and press the units open to the blue. Repeat this process until all of your blue squares are gone.
AGAIN, you do NOT need to make all of the HST units right away! (Unless you REALLY want to !) I will include directions on how to make HST’s along with the directions for each block.
Are you ready for this challenge? I’m excited to see how it goes.
Until next time,

If I’m guessing right, all of your HSTs are 2 1/2” when finished?

Thought so! I have a pizza box full of this size of HSTs that I made as leader Enders from my scrap box. I just might have to quilt along using my stash of HST’s. After I teach my class today at the Guild I’ll check to see if I have enough to get me started!

Great! I’d love to have you join us, this project is simple 16 patch blocks and is meant to show the versatility of half square triangles.
